Det tok EBU et døgn å falle på denne avgjørelsen, etter mange og kraftige reaksjoner fra både kringkastere, artister og fans etter Russlands angrep på Ukraina.
EBU har det siste døgnet høstet kraftig kritikk etter at de i går sendte en e-post til SVTs Kulturnyheterna, hvor de skrev at Eurovision er et ikke-politisk kulturelt arrangement. Videre sa de at formålet med ESC er å forene land og fremme mangfold gjennom musikk, og at de fremdeles ønsker både Russland og Ukraina velkommen til Torino i mai. Les hele saken her.

Ni kringkastere har bedt EBU å gjøre om på sin avgjørelse om å ønske både Ukraina og Russland velkommen til Torino.

The EBU has announced that no Russian act will participate in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
The Executive Board of the EBU made the decision following a recommendation earlier today by the Eurovision Song Contest’s governing body, the Reference Group, based on the rules of the event and the values of the EBU. The Reference Group recommendation was also supported by the EBU’s Television Committee.
The decision reflects concern that, in light of the unprecedented crisis in Ukraine, the inclusion of a Russian entry in this year’s Contest would bring the competition into disrepute.
Before making this decision the EBU took time to consult widely among its membership.

Russland skulle etter planen ha deltatt i første semifinale i Torino, sammen med både Ukraina og Norge. Antall deltakerland i årets ESC er nå nede i 40, etter EBUs avgjørelse.
